Two-time Olympic champion Fetisov, 51, last played a professional game on June 11, 1998, at the age of 40. He will become the oldest player to compete at the top level of Russian hockey.

"Fetisov has agreed to play for CSKA. Now we are working on the documents and if there are no problems he will be able to play on Friday against SKA [St. Petersburg]," the club spokesperson said.

The Kontinental Hockey League later confirmed that Fetisov was eligible for Friday"s game.

Fetisov, who spent much of his career in the U.S., is also a senator in Russia"s upper house of parliament.
